Something to Think About

One of the people gracious enough to comment on posted a link to the Capital District Library Council. The CDLC ran a program similar to the 23 Things Program  I'm participating in the summer...very cool.

Anyway Pollyalida (my kind commenter) posted this video on her blog as part of the CDLC's program. It's only about 5 minutes and very interesting.

While the video has some thought provoking "Big Brother" implications, it made me wonder what else could be done in this situation. Yes, Google and other sites are "customizing" the Internet to fit us as users. BUT as the pool of information increases exponentially...What other methods can we use to sift through it??

Let me know your thoughts...

***also if you are new to TED I recommend looking them up and watching/listening to some other talks..very interesting :) ***

23 Things for Professional Development: #1

Where I am & What I want to get from cdp23?

Well, first things first, I am currently a graduate student in my second semester and am slowly working my way toward a Master's Degree in Information Science. I came into the program with no library or archival experience so I am trying to grab as much as I can through volunteer/internship type positions. I currently volunteer at the NYS Talking Book & Braille Library and the Albany Institute of History & Art. My goal is to successfully graduate with some experience and some good recommendations and use those things to get a job.

I am participating in cdp23 because I want to learn all I can about participating in the field of information science. I want to learn how to get a job...what skills I should focus on...what other people are doing in their careers...etc. As a new student, I want to be able to absorb and experience as much as possible; cdp23 seems like a great way to do this.

In addition, I am intrigued by the formtl of cdp23. I've never tried any kind of web 2.0 interactive social program like this before and I want to see how it works.

On another somewhat related note my Internet which has worked perfectly all month has decided to slowly sputter out and then die. I have been with out a connection since Saturday. This unfortunate turn of events has forced me to travel elsewhere to use the Internet. Therefore, I am not sure how well I will be able to be involved in the program, but so far it looks like I'll be ok.
